Quick Start Guide
New to MixMaster A/B? Here's how to get started comparing your mixes:
1. Load Your Audio Files
Tap the A or B buttons to load audio files from your device. You can load from Files, iCloud Drive, or any other file provider on your iOS device.
2. Start Playback
Press play to hear your audio. By default, the A file will play. The waveform shows your current playback position.
3. Switch Between A/B
Tap the A or B toggle button while playing to instantly switch between files. Playback continues seamlessly at the same position.
4. Set Loop Points
Drag the loop markers on the waveform to define a section. Enable looping to repeat that section for detailed comparison.
5. Use Frequency Filters
Tap the EQ icon and select a frequency range (bass, mids, highs) to isolate specific parts of your mix.
6. View Spectrum
The spectrum analyzer at the bottom shows the frequency content of your audio in real-time as it plays.
Frequently Asked Questions
What audio file formats are supported?
MixMaster A/B supports all common audio formats including:
- WAV (uncompressed)
- AIFF (uncompressed)
- MP3
- AAC
- M4A
- CAF
For the best quality comparison, we recommend using uncompressed formats like WAV or AIFF.
Are there any limitations in the free version?
The free version includes all core features available, but is ad-supported. Specifically, with every 11th file load, you will be prompted to choose either to watch a short ad, after which you'll be reset to load another 10 files without further interruption, or you can always purchase the ad-free unlock for a small one-time fee. This keeps the app free while supporting development.
What happens when I unlock the app?
The one-time unlock purchase removes all ads permanently and disables all analytics and data collection. You get:
- Unlimited audio file loads with zero ads
- Complete privacy (zero data collection)
- Lifetime access to all core features
- All future updates included
- Better app loading performance since we don't initialize any third-party ad SDKs at all once unlocked
The unlock is tied to your Apple ID and will restore on all your devices.
Can I restore my purchase on a new device?
Yes. If you purchased the unlock on one device, tap the "Want no ads?" button in the main window, then tap "Restore Purchases" on your new device. You must be signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
Where are my audio files stored?
All audio files remain in their original locations on your device or cloud storage. MixMaster A/B only accesses files when you explicitly load them. We never copy, move, or upload your audio files.
Do my audio files leave my device?
No, never. All audio processing happens entirely locally on your iOS device. Your files are never uploaded to any server. This ensures complete privacy and fast performance.
How accurate is the spectrum analyzer?
The spectrum analyzer uses FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis for real-time frequency visualization. While it's designed for quick visual reference rather than surgical precision, it provides accurate enough representation for A/B comparison purposes.
Can I compare files with different sample rates?
Yes. MixMaster A/B automatically handles sample rate conversion to ensure smooth playback when switching between files with different sample rates.
Can I compare stereo and mono files?
Yes. Mono files will be played through both channels. All comparisons work seamlessly regardless of channel configuration.
What iOS version is required?
MixMaster A/B requires iOS 15.0 or later. We recommend using the latest iOS version for the best performance.
Does the app work offline?
Yes, completely. MixMaster A/B works entirely offline since all processing is local. You only need an internet connection to download the app and to view an ad every 11th file load in the free version.
Can I use this with headphones or external audio interfaces?
Yes. MixMaster A/B routes audio through iOS's standard audio system, so it works with headphones, Bluetooth speakers, AirPlay devices, and USB/Lightning audio interfaces.
Troubleshooting
The app won't load my audio file
Try these solutions:
- Ensure the file is a supported audio format (WAV, MP3, AIFF, AAC, M4A, CAF)
- Check that you have permission to access the file location
- Try copying the file to your device's local Files app
- Restart the app and try again
- Ensure you have enough free storage space on your device
Playback is stuttering or crackling
Try these solutions:
- Close other apps to free up device resources
- Disable frequency filtering temporarily
- Try a lower sample rate version of your audio file
- Restart your device
- Update to the latest version of MixMaster A/B
A/B switching isn't working smoothly
Ensure both files are fully loaded (wait for the waveforms to appear) before attempting to switch. Large files may take a moment to load into memory.
My purchase isn't working
Try this solution:
- Ensure you're signed in to the App Store with the correct Apple ID
- Restart the app
- Tap the "Want no ads?" button in the top-right corner of the main screen, then tap "Restore Purchases" in the app
- Check that the purchase completed in the App Store
- Contact Apple Support if the charge went through but unlock didn't activate
The spectrum analyzer isn't showing anything
The spectrum analyzer only displays during active playback. Press play to see the frequency analysis. If you still see no spectrum, try reloading your audio file.

Tips for Better A/B Comparisons
Level Matching
Louder mixes often sound "better" even if they're not. Try to ensure your A and B files are at similar loudness levels for more accurate comparison. You can use your DAW to level-match before importing.
Focus on Specific Sections
Don't try to compare entire songs at once. Use loop points to focus on specific sections like the chorus, verses, or problem areas. This helps you make more accurate judgments.
Use Frequency Filtering Strategically
When you hear a difference but can't identify what it is, use frequency filters to isolate the sub, bass, mids, or highs. This helps identify exactly where the changes are happening.
Take Breaks
Ear fatigue is real. If you've been comparing for a while and can't decide which sounds better, take a 15-minute break. Fresh ears make better decisions.
Compare to References
Load commercial references in one slot and your mix in the other. This is one of the fastest ways to calibrate your ears and identify areas for improvement.
